Robert I. "Bob" Smith, M.ASCE
Chair - Region 4 Board of Governors
Bob Smith is an engineer, community advocate, and family man. He is the deputy director of logistics and engineering at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He has been recognized by the National Society of Professional Engineers as one of the top 10 engineers in the federal government. The governor of South Carolina presented him with the Order of the Palmetto for his professional achievements. Educated at the University of South Carolina, he was a member of Chi Epsilon and Tau Beta Pi. Within ASCE he served as the District 6 chair and has held all section offices. He has been named South Carolina engineer of the year and has been the recipient of awards recognizing his professional achievement, leadership, and service. A community advocate, he is a lifetime member of the Boy Scouts of America. Within that organization he is an Eagle Scout and a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award and the Vigil Honor. His wife, Liz, is a social worker. His son, also an Eagle Scout, is attending Wake Forest University.
Michael H. Wenning, PE, M.ASCE
District 9 Director
Mike Wenning took office as District 9 Director as the result of the 2004 ASCE
election. As such, he represents the states of Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee
on the national ASCE Board of Directors.
Mike a member of the Metropolitan Indianapolis Branch, was named as the Indiana
Section’s ASCE Outstanding Civil Engineer of the Year at the Indiana Section’s Annual
Meeting in Indianapolis on April 1, 2004.
As manager of the Bridge Department of Indianapolis based American Consulting, Inc.,
he’s responsible for design and plan development, and serves as chief bridge engineer.
During his career, he has been involved in over 400 bridge rehabilitation and widening
projects throughout Indiana. He has worked on numerous federal, state, county, and
private highway bridges and railroad structures, and also assisted INDOT in the
development of the bridge and bridge rehabilitation chapters for their new LRFD design
manual.
He has served in ASCE leadership roles continuously since 1986. He is a Past President
of Metropolitan Indianapolis Branch, Past President of the Indiana Section, and Chairman
of the District 9 Council. He serves on various ASCE Committees, including Chairman
of the Indiana Section Nominations and Awards Committee. He is a member of the
ACEC Ethics Committee, and over the years has also worked with a number of students
in grade and junior high schools, teaching them about our grand old profession of Civil
Engineering.
Mike graduated from Indianapolis North Central High School in 1976, and began his
engineering studies at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at New London, CT. He
concluded his formal education at Purdue University in 1981 with a BS degree in Civil
Engineering, following in the chosen occupation of his father. At Radiant Christian Life
Church in Westfield, IN, he serves as Life Group Leader and usher, as well as several
other ministries, and lives in Fishers, IN, with his wife and their three children.
